Chinatown and Arab Street

The Chinatown part of Singapore is a little run down, but is now starting to become more developed as the years go by. Places that have been recently restored would be the Tanjong Pagar Conservation Area that has lots of shops. There are some great Tea-houses, and some fine Chinese Herbal medicine shops, like the Thong Chai Medical Hall. Also one can admire the living conditions of a Chinese home that was the typical standard way back in the 1920s. This can be viewed at the Chinaman Scholars Gallery. The streets are usually packed around here and especially around the time of the Chinese New Year, when a lot of celebrations begin. There would be lion dances and Chinese opera performing. Located in this area are some fine temples and mosques. There is the grand Thian Hock Keng Temple and the Sri Mariamman Temple to begin with.

Arab Street has also the famous Sultan Mosque to attract all the visitors. It is considered the repository of culture for the city's Muslim community. In the area are many Muslim shops, coffee shops, and restaurants that will serve you up some fine traditional Indian and Malaysian cuisine. The place is usually very busy and it gets even busier during the holy month of Ramadan, when more food stalls are required to keep up with the demand for breaking fast at dusk. The delightful shopping experience around here is in total contrast to the glamorous malls of Orchard Road. One will enjoy the unique blend of culture and diversity in the shops and restaurants around here. Most of the stores will concentrate on selling Middle Eastern and Indonesian merchandise on their premises. If one needs a carpet, or some fine antiques and exotic jewellery, then this area may suit your shopping requirements. There are also lots of textiles, basket wares and perfume that is alcohol free. There is an old Singapore cemetery called Istana Kampung Glam and is worth taking a stroll around to witness the oldest Malay cemetery in all of Singapore.
