The Orchard Road Shopping belt is the ideal place to stay if your main purpose is to go shopping around the city. The majority of the hotels in Singapore are located in this district. There are loads of shopping malls located around here and the entire shopping belt covers about 3 kilometres of shopping extravaganza.
There are some very pricey hotels in the area that can boast about their 5 and 6 star status. Total luxury is what you will find in most of these places.
For the more moderate spender, one can find some really good 3 and 4 star hotels that have as much style and comfort as anywhere else. Several of the smaller hotels would also have their own in-house restaurant and business centre. Also for the budget traveller, there are some lower end no-frills hotels that are accommodating and provide a good service. Most are comfortable, but a lot of these places would only be very basic.
Out on the edge of city there would be better value with regards to the price of hotels. And the fringe area of the city is well serviced by bus and train, and you can be in and out of the city in minutes. Many of the no-frills hotels would be located here and are of a good standard. Another place known as the Geylang District is where the city's Red Light District is situated and is a little further out of the city and the area has adequate lodgings.
For the students and backpackers, there are one or two youth hostels in the city, and there are only a limited amount of guest houses that offer some value with dorm beds priced under $25 per night. There is a youth hostel located somewhere in between the Orchard Road area and the Colonial district.
